Plan clothing for your trip so that everything can be worn together. This reduces the need to pack individual “outfits” and allows you to plan for the number of days you’ll be traveling. If all of your clothes match, you don’t have to worry about which are clean when you're doing laundry.
Try locating airlines that are not popular. Many smaller airlines do exist and many are great, cheaper alternatives to the larger more popular airlines. In fact, making a fuss at the security checkpoint is almost always a ticket to the express lane for the extra search.
These days you want to think “light" when you travel–in two different senses of the word. You want to go to a place with warm sunlight when it is dark and cold back home. You also want to think “light in weight.” For instance, the hotel room will have packets of soap, shampoo, etc. Why pay the airline extra to take things you don’t really need?

When traveling to tropical areas, always keep your dirty laundry in a closed bag. Hotels and homes in tropical parts of the world aren’t as bug-proof as most American homes. Dirty laundry will attract insects, especially ants, meaning that clothing that was simply dirty, is now completely unwearable for the rest of the trip.
If you are staying at a lower-cost or no-name hotel when traveling, never put your bag on the bed. Be sure to check the sheet and spreads for bugs. If you must take your clothing out of your luggage, hang it in the closet instead of putting in the dresser or onto the furniture. Bedbugs are a major problem in North American hotels.

You should be well aware of the current exchange rate because oftentimes foreign merchants will rip off Americans because they do not know the value of their money in the foreign country.
When traveling in Europe, walk! Many European cities are smaller and more pedestrian friendlier than their American counterparts. Walking through a city will let you experience more and allow you to stop and discover interesting places along your route. Not only that, but you’ll save on cab fares and other travel expenses.
Buy American souvenirs to barter overseas. Stop at a local dollar store and pick up small souvenirs like postcards, t-shirts, and tiny replicas of famous landmarks. Foreigners love these trinkets, and they will go out of their way to get them. Bring them along and use them to get a souvenir that you have always wanted.
If you want to be able to barter overseas, bring something that is difficult to get outside of your own country. Bourbon is a great example for Americans. American Bourbon is nearly impossible to find outside of the United States, so much so that other countries will pay you double the original cost.
